چکیده

Spectral control of the emissivity of surfaces is essential in applications such as solar thermal energy and thermophotovoltaic energy conversion in order to achieve the highest conversion efficiencies possible. We investigated surfaces consisting of periodic, nanoscale V-grooves coated with aperiodic metal-dielectric stacks. This approach combines impedance matching using tapered metallic features with the excellent spectral selectivity of aperiodic metaldielectric stacks. We explain how changes in the angle of the V-grooves can be used to tailor the spectral selectivity over a wide angular range to significantly increase the efficiency of thermophotovoltaic and solar thermal systems. Optimal coatings for concentrated solar power are predicted to have thermal emissivity below 5% at 450°C while absorbing >90% of the incident light.

Aerosol based direct-write micro-additive fabrication method for sub-mm 3D metal-dielectric structures

The fabrication of 3D metal-dielectric structures at sub-mm length scale is highly important in order to realize low-loss passives and GHz wavelength antennas with applications in wearable and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. The inherent 2D nature of lithographic processes severely limits the available manufacturing routes to fabricate 3D structures. Further, the lithographic processes are su...

DOI: 10.1002/aenm.201301804 coatings are manufactured by fi lm deposition techniques such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), sputtering, or evaporation, which have many disadvantages in terms of cost and the possibility of high temperature environments that are unsuitable for certain solar cell architectures. Thus, how cheaply and easily these layers can be made and how effective they are is o...
